After my most exhausting year a preschool teacher... I was very tired, I was very pregnant, and I was very determined.
At 38 weeks pregnant, I enrolled in grad school.
. That year, my class was one of the toughest I’d ever had. Every day was a challenge, but those kids also became some of my all-time favorites.
One boy, in particular, changed the entire trajectory of my career.
This little boy would walk into the classroom every morning, looking adorable with his big eyes and sweet voice, ready to explore and play. But within minutes, the crying would begin—another child hurt, another toy stolen.
He was stabbing kids with pencils.
Every day, we tried everything to discipline and prevent these behaviors. We even veered away from the center’s core philosophy, desperate to manage the situation as parents threatened to quit or sue. Tears flowed. The director was at a loss. Expulsion, though not part of the center’s values, seemed like the only option left.
Then, we turned to Positive Behavior Support.
We started tracking his behavior and discovered a pattern: he wasn’t randomly attacking others. He was trying to engage with them—he just didn’t know how.
"If he could do well, he would do well" - Ross Greene
When we began addressing the why behind his actions, everything started to change.
He went from daily incident reports and constant visits to the director’s office to thriving—playing with his peers and truly enjoying his days at school.
His transformation brought relief to everyone: his parents, the other kids’ parents, and our entire teaching team.
That moment sparked something in me. I knew I had to learn more about this approach. I studied Positive Behavior Support extensively in grad school, and for the past 8½ years, I’ve been using it consistently.
It works.
Using time outs so it STOPS
Giving in so it STOPS
Punishing, spanking, and threats so it STOPS.
Many parenting experts focus on logical strategies for handling tantrums and meltdowns.
However, when kids are in fight-or-flight mode, logic doesn't work.
Instead, we need to help them calm their bodies first, so they can process logically.

"I have so much more time and energy to be the person I want to be."
"We are on our way home from a 2 week visit with my family. In the car just now, I'm realizing I didn't need to do a single punishment the whole time! No time outs, no spankings, no toys taken away. I didn't even need to bring anyone to the safe place. WOW! When I first started following Lauren, I wondered how I'd have the energy and patience to institute all these techniques.
But now I see that when I focus on prevention and the needs of our individual children, I have so much more time and energy to be the person I want to be. We are having so much fun!"
- Arianne A. (former group coaching)
Exploring Sensory Preferences: Understanding Your Child's Unique Needs
This week, we’ll explore the seven senses and how they shape your child’s world. Understanding their sensory needs can help prevent meltdowns, support emotional regulation, and strengthen your connection—without trying to change who they are. You’ll also discover your own sensory patterns, making parenting feel more balanced and less exhausting.
Understanding & Supporting Outbursts and Emotions
Big emotions and outbursts can leave even the most mindful parents feeling stuck. How do you guide your child through their feelings without shutting them down? This week, we’ll break down the Zones of Regulation and simple ways to build emotional intelligence—so you can support their emotions while still setting healthy boundaries.
How to Help Your Kids Choose to Listen
t’s easy to physically guide little ones when they refuse to listen, but that won’t work as they grow—and we don’t want to rely on bribes or threats either. This week, we’ll explore 15 practical ways to foster cooperation, so your child learns to listen willingly, not just because they have to.
Teaching Through Consequences: Strategies that Work
What do you do when your child bites, throws, or swears? Traditional discipline often relies on shame—like biting back or soap in the mouth—but that doesn’t teach the lesson we want. This week, we’ll focus on consequences that help kids understand their choices and learn from them, without damaging your connection.
Recognizing and Managing Anxiety in Children
Did you know that stomach aches and defiance can actually be signs of anxiety? This week, we'll break down the basics of the autonomic nervous system—what happens in our body during fight or flight—and share simple, supportive ways to help your child through those anxious moments.
Sibling Rivalry & Creating a Problem Solving Families
We'll explore how to build a home culture of cooperation and problem-solving. We'll also uncover those everyday habits that might be unknowingly fueling sibling resentment and misunderstandings. This course offers valuable strategies—not just for strengthening sibling bonds but also for handling peer conflicts in a way that teaches accountability and creative problem-solving.
Get on the same page as your parenting partner
I designed this couples session so you can align on parenting without both partners needing to attend every single session. We'll break down how to understand challenging behavior, prevent it, and teach new skills. Over six weeks, you'll gather practical strategies that fit easily into your family culture. Plus, we'll guide you on adjusting your perspective when you and your partner aren't on the same page—focusing on their strengths along the way.

"What I noticed and what Lauren taught me was that I needed to control my own emotions or manage my own emotions, rather before I could even learn or help my kids manage theirs."
-Krystal Wilkerson
"And that's when the light switched on that I didn't even know was off...The most important thing that Lauren has taught me, the most useful, has been to stay curious."
-Lindsey Child
A mom shared a story with me that was so validating and proved these strategies truly work.
"Today my son had to have his blood drawn and came completely unglued in the lobby of the clinic. Everyone was looking and for a tiny second I was so embarrassed.
Then I remembered... I got down on his level right there and started giving his emotions words and validation: “You’re really nervous about getting your blood drawn! You don’t want to have someone poke you with a needle because that is scary and can kind of hurt!”
I was amazed at how quickly he started to calm down because I was communicating to him that I was hearing him and his emotions were OK! By the time we walked back the receptionist was in tears and told me “that was beautiful to watch”
A few months ago I would have probably told him to be tough and stop crying. As I’ve started implementing these strategies I’ve been called “soft” and “a pushover” but today was just a reminder that this is right!
I feel that it is such a Christlike way to parent and even though I have a LONG ways to go.
I walked away from that experience (that would usually embarrass, frustrate and emotionally drain me) loving being a parent and having so much love for my little guy who was so brave even through all the tears." - Alyssa N.
